MySQL GUI tools update and Aqua Data studio

Anyone who has read (and paid attention) to my blog knows that I use MySQL. Personally I love the free database, so far I haven't met any project it couldn't handle. Where I think it has been let down is by its GUI tools. Though they have been there by either MySQL themselves or a 3rd party they always seem flaky, or never quite logical. This is especially true for MySQL recent re-incarnations of their GUI tools package.

Saying that they have just released version r5 of the GUI tools so I'm in the middle of trying them out and seeing if they still crash unpredictably. Plus one gripe is the huge difference between Mac and Windows versions (Windows version is better(and more stable)).

Whats even better is that, and thanks to Dave Shuck and in turn Matt Woodward, I've found Aqua Data Studio. Not only is it platform independent, but it can connect to all of the following DB's;

  • Oracle
  • DB2 UDB
  • SQL Server
  • Sybase ASE
  • Sybase Anywhere
  • Informix
  • PostgreSQL
  • MySQL

So far it's be a breath of fresh air. With tabbed SQL panels, code insight it's defiantly worth the money. Which brings me to the cost part. The license is FREE for educational institutions and personal home use but $149USD (£80) for commercial use which is good considering the functionality!

I can second Aqua Data Studio...it's been a godsend the last few weeks while working with a nasty Oracle database designed by...well...no thinking human would have designed it. Let's leave it at that.

The features are outstanding, though performance was sometimes a little sluggish. I'm not complaining though. I'm a huge fan!
Hi Andy - there is also Toad and some here: http://www.succor.co.uk/index.cfm/2006/10/9/mySQL-...
Looks like a Java app, is it Netbeans-based? How is performance?
@Rob, The performance on my machine (MBP with 2gb RAM) is fine, no complaints, and yes I think its Net Beans based

@Nick, cheers for the link. Toad is Windows only though (I thought any). SQLYog (What a weird name) I never got into, I always thought the interface wasn't intuitive enough. As for MySQL own tools, hopefully one day they will be stable and feel less like a pre version 1 release.
Andy, if you are using mySQL I also use CocoaMySQL from http://cocoamysql.sourceforge.net/ Its pretty neat as you can also do data entry into the tables (not just parse some SQL)

Cocoa and ADS are my tools of choice.

MD
You're using the same as me Mark. I use CocoaMySQL for quick look-ups and DB changes :o)
I've been using <a href="http://http://www.navicat.com/"; title="Navicat">Navicat</a> at work and it's been really great, but now that I've seen some of the other posts I'm eager to check them out as well.

PS: I realize this post is quite old, so really I just wanted to thank you guys for the mysql gui leads =)
