The unthinkable has happened

All was going well in my mac land..... then disaster struck. My CD drive only recongises DVD's now. Audio and data CD's - nothing, nada, zip - you really can forget about it. After a 30 min call to tech support (who were really good) its a hardware fault and I have to take the machine to a service centre. D'oh Also to make things worse my Mighty Mouse isn't so mighty any more. The up-scroll has stopped working, so i can only go down and sideways on a document!! aarrggghhh!!!

So what do I do. The first service centre (not an Apple store) said 1-2 weeks to resolve (including ordering of the part. Im waiting on a quote from another. Am i better of going to an official store? What have other people done.

Don't worry about ol'mousey though. Apple were really good about that, they are sending me another one in the post and I have to return the broken one when I receive it. Talk about no quibble!

Although I must add, that all the problems I have had with Macs (since early 2002 when I "converted") have always been of the physical sort, some part going wrong that has been replaced. Dude you are under apple care! I still have like 122 days of Apple Care.

You can check out how long you have by going to this page: http://www.apple.com/uk/support/

I recon you are WELL under warranty!
Im well under warranty (got the mac in July) plus I picked up apple care as well - you just never know plus I wrangled a deal on it :o)

Its just scared the $@£$ out of me when they said 2 weeks (possibly). I've got my old HP lappy here still - I just don't think I can do it!
Sounds like a good excuse for a two week holiday if you ask me. Unless your boss get you a replacement of equal or better quality, you can happily cuddle up on the couch and watch movies all day :)
I would definately call the Apple store. I had some trouble with the USB ports on my 20" iMac and the Apple store took care of it in 1 day.

Definately worth a call.
Trond, two weeks off would be nice - but movies are outta the question. I'd probably be on my Xbox 360 - getting addicted at the moment. But I do like the idea.

Russ, The Apple store is definatley the way I want to go. There is one opening near me in December. Apart from that I got to travel to central London - which is something I try not to do if I got no reason to go :o) D'oh D'oh! Its all not good.

Anyone got a spare MacBookPro they wanna lend me ?? Worth a try :o)
